Florida Court Dismisses Donald Trump’s Defamation Suit Against CNN Over ‘the Big Lie’

A federal judge in South Florida appointed by Donald Trump has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by the former president against CNN. Trump claimed that references to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election as “the Big Lie” equated to comparing him to Adolf Hitler. The lawsuit sought punitive damages of $475 million, alleging that the references had damaged his reputation and political career.

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Raag Singhal stated that the references made by CNN were opinions rather than factual statements. The judge also emphasized that it was a stretch to link Trump’s election challenges to Nazi propaganda or Hitler’s regime. Singhal concluded that the use of the phrase “the Big Lie” did not imply that Trump advocated for persecution or genocide against any group of people.

Trump’s attorneys in South Florida and Washington, as well as CNN’s attorneys in Atlanta and South Florida, were contacted for comment but did not respond at the time of this article.
