Taylor Fritz Loses to Tallon Griekspoor in Semifinals of D.C. Tournament

Top American Taylor Fritz’s winning streak came to an end in the semifinals of the D.C. Open on Saturday night. He was defeated by Tallon Griekspoor in three sets.

This victory for the 37th-ranked Dutchman is his first career win over a top 10 opponent. Griekspoor will be playing in the final for his third ATP title of 2023. It’s quite impressive considering he was ranked No. 153 in the world at the beginning of this year.

Griekspoor said, “Coming here, first week of the American swing. I like the hard courts, but, I mean, making final here is something really special. Especially beating Taylor here at home. He’s a Top-10 player for many years already. I just kept working day in and day out, trying to do the right things.”

Fritz, the world No. 9 and top Washington seed, was hoping for his second final appearance in two weeks after winning the Atlanta Open title last week.

Griekspoor broke Fritz’s serve three times in the match, which is quite an accomplishment, considering Fritz had only been broken twice in his last 82 service games.

Looking ahead, Griekspoor is set to face either Grigor Dimitrov or Daniel Evans in the final. Griekspoor has never played against either of them before. But he is feeling confident and believes he is a much stronger player now compared to last year.

It’s a tough loss for Fritz, who played well in the match but couldn’t find a way to win those crucial rallies. Griekspoor simply had the upper hand in this match.

In conclusion, Griekspoor’s impressive win against Fritz puts him in the final of the D.C. Tournament. It’s a remarkable achievement for a player who has steadily improved his game this year. The final showdown will surely be an exciting match with Griekspoor looking to win his third ATP title.
