Celebrate National Cinema Day with Discounted Tickets for Barbie!

Still haven’t seen “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? This Sunday, you’ll be able to catch up for $4 a ticket in movie theaters nationwide.

Theater owners announced Monday that the second annual National Cinema Day will be held on Sunday, August 27. For one day, all movies – in all formats and at all showtimes – will be $4 at participating theaters. Over 3,000 theaters, including leading chains AMC and Regal, are participating in this event.

This is the second year of the event, organized by the Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Theater Owners. Last year, the inaugural National Cinema Day was a huge success with an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers purchasing $3 tickets on Saturday, September 3. This year, the event has moved up to Sunday on the calendar and tickets will cost $1 more at $4 each.

Despite the slightly higher price, there has been sustained interest in “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” leading to a booming August box office. The summer box office is currently at $3.8 billion in ticket sales, a 16.6% increase compared to the same point in 2022.

Unlike last year, this year’s Cinema Day will feature a stronger lineup of movies including “Barbie” in its fifth week, Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking film “Oppenheimer,” the second week of the DC Comics film “Blue Beetle,” and new releases such as “Gran Turismo,” “Golda,” “Bottoms,” and “Retribution.”

In addition to discounted tickets, the event also serves as a way for studios to promote their upcoming fall releases. A sneak peek of anticipated autumn movies will be shown before each screening.
