Bob Barker, Legendary Host of ‘The Price Is Right’ and ‘Truth or Consequences’ and Animal Rights Activist, Passes Away at 99

Bob Barker, the iconic game show host known for his roles on “Truth or Consequences” and “The Price Is Right,” has passed away at the age of 99. Barker, who was also a passionate animal rights activist, died at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday morning.

Barker’s close friend and co-executor of his estate, Nancy Burnet, expressed her pride in their work together to expose animal cruelty in the entertainment industry and improve the well-being of abused animals both in the United States and internationally.

After more than 50 years in the business, Barker retired from his hosting duties in 2007, expressing his gratitude to the audience for inviting him into their homes for all those years. He began his career in radio and was invited to audition for the game show “Truth or Consequences” in 1956, which led to his long-running success in the television industry.

Aside from “Truth or Consequences,” Barker also hosted a revived version of “The Price Is Right” on CBS starting in 1972. The show became the longest-running game show on television and cemented Barker’s place in entertainment history. He played a crucial role in making contestants and viewers feel welcome and respected, maintaining a warm and gracious demeanor throughout his career.

Barker was not only known for his game show hosting skills but also for his dedication to animal rights. He used his platform to advocate for the spaying and neutering of pets and successfully campaigned to ban fur coats as prizes on “The Price Is Right.” Additionally, he served as the host of the Miss USA Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant for 20 years.
