New York Attorney General Requests Immediate Ruling in Trump Fraud Lawsuit

New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, is urging Judge Arthur Engoron to issue an immediate verdict in her civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump. In court papers made public on Wednesday, James claims that Trump and his company committed fraud by lying on financial statements about his wealth and the value of his assets. The attorney general is seeking $250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York. A hearing on James’ request is scheduled for September 22, and the trial is set for October 2.

Even if the judge rules on the fraud claim, he will still preside over a non-jury trial on other claims in the lawsuit if the case is not settled. Trump and his lawyers have not yet commented on the matter. The former president has referred to the lawsuit as a “politically motivated Witch Hunt” led by James and other Democrats.

This lawsuit is one of many legal challenges Trump is facing as he considers a return to politics. He has been indicted four times in the last five months on various charges, including plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss and falsifying business records. Some of his criminal trials are scheduled to overlap with the busy presidential primary season.

According to James’ office, there is “mountain of undisputed evidence” that proves Trump’s financial statements were false or misleading and were used to defraud banks and insurers in business transactions. The attorney general’s special litigation counsel, Andrew Amer, argues that no trial is needed to determine the fraudulent actions of Trump and his company.

In addition to Trump, the lawsuit also names two of his children, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump, as defendants, along with other high-level Trump Organization officials. Ivanka Trump was initially named as a defendant but was dismissed from the case in June.

In September 2022, James sued Trump, alleging that he and his company had lied on annual financial statements for at least a decade. The statements allegedly inflated Trump’s net worth by billions of dollars and misled banks and insurers about the value of his assets. James referred to the alleged scheme as “The art of the steal,” playing on the title of Trump’s memoir, “The Art of the Deal.”

Overall, this case represents another legal hurdle for Trump, who continues to face multiple lawsuits and investigations. It remains to be seen how the court will rule on the fraud claim and what impact it could have on Trump’s future political aspirations.
